When a remote-work promise is not a contract term
How to test remote and hybrid working language before accepting a German employment offer.
Ask where the promise lives
“We normally work from home three days a week” may describe a team’s current habit. A policy can be more formal but still allow the employer to revise it. Contract wording may provide stronger clarity, though every clause must be read in full.
Before signing, ask which document governs the arrangement, who can change it and what attendance is expected for meetings, onboarding or team events. If the role is advertised as remote, confirm whether there is a required residence location or maximum distance from the office.
Account for the working day
Remote-work documents may address equipment, internet costs, data security, working-time recording and workplace safety. They may also distinguish mobile work from a formally established home office. These distinctions can affect both obligations and what the employer provides.
Compare the downside
If remote work is essential because of caregiving, disability, distance or relocation plans, treat unclear wording as a material offer risk rather than a minor perk. Ask for the commitment you actually rely on to be documented, and obtain specialist advice where individual circumstances require it.
