Probation and notice periods: read them as a pair
Why German employment offer reviews should compare probation and termination notice wording together.
Two timelines, one decision
German employment contracts commonly state a probationary period and a shorter notice period during it. The exact clause matters, as do statutory rules and any collective agreement. Compare the date probation ends with the notice mechanism that applies before and after that date.
For a candidate leaving secure employment, six months of probation can matter as much as a salary increase. Ask what onboarding, targets and feedback points are planned. Those answers do not remove contractual risk, but they help reveal whether the employer has a considered start process.
Longer is not always safer
After probation, a long notice period can provide predictability if the employer terminates—but it can also delay your own future move. Check whether contractual extensions bind both parties, whether garden leave is addressed and how unused holiday is handled.
Know when practical review ends
General explanation can help you formulate questions. A dispute, an unusual termination clause, a fixed-term arrangement or uncertainty about statutory application belongs with a qualified German employment lawyer. Recognising that boundary before signing is part of a careful comparison.
